- Anything subjective but not arbitrary
I create physical objects to demonstrate how we perceive the physical world. that is, it is our position that we have perceptions of objects, processes, events, and states of affairs that have characteristics that are "material" (if you will) like width, depth, and height, and are subject to displacement, acceleration, and so on. Our world, obviously, does not have such characteristics. Instead, we see (in the case of vision) shapes, sizes, movement and so on but those are relevant to our actions - they are "behavioral" facts, not "physical facts." And they are not subject to inspection by anyone else because they are "subjective," our own perceptions, that we use in doing things to meet our needs, the most basic being to survive. For the most part, what we perceive turns out to be veridical, but not always. If we are functioning normally, that is, without impairment, even if it is not veridical, it is still not arbitrary. On further investigation even a non-veridical perception will turn out to agree with what we perceive. That is, it can be explained. Thus it is "subjective - but not arbitrary". To close I will note that we are living individuals, not just states of matter or energy, and to understand ourselves, we need more than material predicates. My interest is in how we operate using concepts, processes, etc., that in some cases tell us something about the physical world we are in but usually that's not enough to make us understandable to others. OK, enough now. Good to meet you all.Interact
