Retired Mechanical Design Engineer started initially in the steel making industry with Dorman Long in 1962 as an apprentice with 16 months initial training. 4 months Basic engineering, 4 basic machining, 4 advanced engineering and finally 4 advanced engineering before being sent to the steel plant for on the job training with experienced journeymen. Spent the following years on normal maintenance work on various facilities blast furnaces, open hearth furnaces, boilers, rolling mills and tool room.
Spent 2 years in merchant navy as marine engineer on sea going tankers then returned to uk and joined ICI Chemicals as maintenance fitter.
Many positions in the subsequent years ranging from draughtsman to senior engineer in many different industries in both staff and contract roles in many different countries worlwide.
