      Dear members,

I would just like to take this opportunity to wish you a great Christmas and all the very best for 2013. Please spread the lurve on this thread. This past year has been an excellent one for the Mechanical Design Forum and I'd like to thank you all for your contributions and for helping to make it a success. Great to see so many regular members now; this place really has a community feel. Below is a little MDF "e-card" for you. I hope you like it. I've tried to give it a "mechanical engineering" feel! Underneath are also a few more light-hearted discussions from the last 12 months, best enjoyed over a glass of mulled wine :D.

      Best regards,

      Has this happened to you
You come up with a kick ass designs for a new product. The design chosen by the boss is the one that lacks some of the crucial details however.... You have no idea how to make it work in the time you have been given....... Yea, having one of those days....

      Google's Project Glass. Thoughts?
I'm sure that people will be queueing around the block for this type of technology, but it's not my cup of tea. It's all nice and everything, but I prefer not to be in a personal world of electronic noise and distraction everywhere I go ;)

      Plastic Eating Mushrooms
Found this, thought it was amazing. Original article is at: http://designtaxi.com/news/352659/Re...n-Eat-Plastic/ Yale researchers have discovered

The public: not a clue about engineering?
...is a quote from this article about women and technology and why women don't want to be "geeks". I think it illustrates how in the UK there's a real distorted view of what engineering is. There are some non-technical people in the past I've attempted to explain what I do to, but they just don't "get" it. Amazing the amount of ignorance really.

Are brighter headlights helpful? Or hurtful? Or a statement?
This is a discussion topic only. I do not think we are going to overturn marketing decisions that sell cars. But I do think it warrants discussion and I'd like to hear what others think.

      Mechanical Design problem for "America"
Problem: Low cost method of lowering approx 312 million people of various sizes and shapes, (use Measure of Man, Henry Dreyfus) for averages, safely down a fiscal cliff.... Fiscal cliff, no numbers yet, so be conservative....

Do you listen to music while you work?
Usually I find it absolutely impossible to concentate on music and performing another activity simultaneously (I mean if I tried to walk down the street listening to an MP3 player I would just bump into things). Therefore I am usually unable to listen to ANY music and work....
