For me, learning engineering grew out of a desire to be able to turn creative ideas into reality, and to do that efficiently and properly (so that things actually worked WELL, not just worked). Many creative people do not consider themselves creative - some of the most creative I know are machinists.

I think the "old thinking" that creativity and scientific knowledge/method (associated with engineering) are somehow opposites is well and truly headed towards the wayside. Some of today's (and tomorrows) greatest innovators use technology as their creative medium, and that will only increase as time goes on.
