      Project Safety and Environmental Manager (PSEM) - Archerfish

      A new role is becoming available within BAE Systems, Maritime Services, Product and Training Services with responsibility for the delivery of Product Safety & Environmental performance into the Archerfish Project, an innovative specialist Counter Mine System. This PSEM role will report into the Archerfish Project Manager, Archerfish Systems Design Authority and the Product Safety Engineering Manager and requires an individual who is strong in the field of Product Safety and demonstrates good leadership and communication skills.

      Ensure Safety Engineering and Environmental Assessment activities are carried out against the projects SEMP, business & corporate requirements, customer specification, Military Standards and Regulations.

      Be required to undertake responsibility for budget control and management of Safety Engineering and Environmental Assessment activities within budgets.

      Be able to support the business strategy in the field of safety and environmental management.

      Show firm and fair leadership across the Archerfish Safety Team.

      As Product Safety and Environmental Manager your main responsibilities will involve:

      Provide advice and guidance to the project team on product safety, product environmental, COSHH and other occupational safety issues, ensure that safety and environmental considerations are an integral part of the design process and take cognisance of the whole product lifecycle.

      Prepare, maintain and manage the implementation of Project Safety and Environmental Management Plans to ensure that Product Safety can be managed in a cost-effective manner.

      Perform Hazard Identification and Analysis in accordance with processes defined in the Safety and Environmental Management Plan to ensure that all potential hazards are identified and evaluated.

      Control and maintain the Hazard Log Database ensuring all identified hazards are managed to the ‘As Low As Reasonably Practicable’ (ALARP) status.

      Ensure that the Archerfish project team make appropriate use of the Business’ relevant Subject Matter Experts (SMEs).

      When required manage specialist safety or environmental staff assigned to the project team. For these specialists, and any project team member undertaking safety related activities, ensure that their competency levels are appropriate and additional training needs identified to the Product Safety Engineering Manager.

      Provide safety approval of top-level (as defined by the Safety Management Plan) documents, major assembly drawings and their modifications, which define the design standard of the Product(s) produced by, or result from the Project.

      Ensure that the standards of Product Safety and Product Environmental defined by statutory, business and customer requirements are observed in the design of the Product(s) produced by, or resulting from projects.

      Interface with the Customer’s Project Team when required and any associated approval body e.g. Dept. of Defense, Sub-contractor.

      Interact with and review submissions from suppliers & subcontractors to ensure the safety of supplied material utilising inputs to sub-contracts, sub-contractor SEMPs and the completion of product safety audits.

      Perform Environmental Impact Assessment in accordance with processes defined in the Safety and Environmental Management Plan to ensure that all environmental impacts are identified and evaluated.

      Ensure that any Product Safety or Product Environmental issue that cannot be resolved with either the Project Manager or Systems Design Authority is brought to the attention of the Product Safety Engineering Manager.

      Liaise with Project Management for project / activity control & interface with engineering / manufacturing / facilities for resolution of Product Safety / Environmental activities.

      As Product Safety and Environmental Manager your skills and qualifications will ideally include:

      This is an exciting and challenging role for an individual who is conversant with Product Safety in the Military Domain and the successful applicant will be expected to hold, as a minimum, the following qualifications and competencies:

      BSc or BEng Degree in a relevant discipline.

      Significant demonstrable capability in the sphere of Product Safety Engineering.

      Additionally the following qualifications and skills are considered beneficial to this role:

      Ship Safety Management Office (SSMO) Certificate.

      Weapons, Ordnance, Munitions and Explosives awareness.

      ITAR awareness.

      Membership of a professional body (e.g. IET, IMechE, IExpE).

      PC Skills (e.g. Word Processing).

      Note: The term ‘Product Safety’ applied throughout this specification encompasses Product Environmental.

      What we're looking for in you

      We are looking for candidates with extensive product safety knowledge, a background in engineering coupled with outstanding communication skills.
