I believe you are talking about two different concepts in ME: Controls, and Stresses.

A few good book for stresses are:

Beginning Stress Analysis: "Mechanics of Materials" by Hibbler
      http://www.amazon.com/Mechanics-Materials-Edition-Russell-Hibbeler/dp/0132209918

More in-depth knowledge of stress analysis, including fatigue and creep analysis (plus an intro to fracture mechanics):
Try "Machine Design" by Robert Norton
      http://www.amazon.com/Machine-Design-Edition-Robert-Norton/dp/0136123708

I am more of a machine design person and I have not yet found a controls book that makes me like the subject as a whole. So I don't have any good books about controls that I can recommend.

      Hope this helps

      Hi CDW
I can't help on the controls but for stress in machine design:
Many engineers of my generation studied machine design using a book written by Shigley (and Mitchel or Miche)
and I still refer to it regularly or a later edition i picked up used. (be sure to get a recent edition because a fatigue course I took in 2005 taught me that research has shown that 24 years ago the fatigue analysis calculations were a bit wrong)

this is now what is available and I am planning on buying it: "Shigley's Mechanical Engineering Design"
For more indepth study I recomend the asm Handbooks, probably available at the engineering library.
      Regards
      W

      controls

"feedback control of dynamic systems" :
Feedback Control of Dynamics Systems (Addison-Wesley series in electrical engineering)

Gene F. Franklin, J. David Powell, Abbas Emami-Naeini
      Bookseller: Blue Cloud Books
      (Phoenix, AZ, U.S.A.)
      Bookseller Rating: [IMG]
      Quantity Available: 1
      ISBN: 0201115409 / 0-201-11540-9

      also
      Digital Control of Dynamic Systems

      Gene F. Franklin / J.David Powell
      Bookseller: SellTextbooks
      (Salem, OR, U.S.A.)
      Bookseller Rating: [IMG]

these were what I used in school. I think they are to controls what shigley is to mechanics
