Applications are welcome from less experienced candidates seeking career development who fulfil the essential criteria for the role attracting a salary of up to £35k pa.

Do you want to help shape the future of the world`s energy? Nuclear fusion, the process that powers The Sun, can play a big part in our carbon-free energy future. The Culham Centre for Fusion Energy (CCFE) is part of the UK Atomic Energy Authority and is one of the world`s leading fusion research laboratories. Our scientists and engineers are working with partners around the globe to develop fusion as a new source of clean energy for tomorrow`s power stations.

We are currently looking to recruit an experienced Mechanical Engineer to initiate, develop and analyse mechanical designs within some of our most technically challenging projects.

You will be an integral part of a dynamic team of engineers and analysts. You will be intimately involved with mechanical design and analysis and you will work in a project environment where you will take a lead role. You will also play an active role in the procurement, installation and commissioning of new components and systems.

      Knowledge skills and experience

-A relevant engineering degree or equivalent
-Proven capability in engineering analysis and a good working knowledge of engineering materials and their properties (many of the components that you will be designing are one-offs, so you will often need to perform exploratory design calculations using first principles)
-Experience in several of the following engineering disciplines: heat transfer and fluid flow, structural hand calculations, design codes and standards, finite element analysis (structural and thermal), design for manufacture, practical vacuum technology and installation of complex mechanical systems
-Proven ability to manage and deliver projects involving the above disciplines
      -Experience in writing technical reports
-Experience in leading a team in a technical project environment
      -Excellent interpersonal skills

-Experience of working within multinational technical projects
-Experience in producing bids for design work or placing contracts with industry (manufacturing procurement contracts or engineering consultancy)
-Chartered status with the IMechE (or equivalent institution)

      Special requirements:

-As part of your role you could be asked to work in radiation controlled areas or in beryllium controlled areas. Full training and medical assessments will be provided if this is necessary

Please be advised that this vacancy may close earlier than stated if large or sufficient numbers of applications are received.
