An exciting opportunity currently exists for a Design Engineer to join our team, based in Derby and nominally reporting to the New Generation Customer Facing Business Unit (CFBU) Fluids Systems / Operations Team Leader. The Fluids Systems / Operations Team is responsible for defining the overall operating principles for the propulsion plant with support from various internal and external design teams, for production of key safety documentation and for the development of a real time simulation of the propulsion plant with an active mock-up of the control panels.

Our Submarines Business is responsible for the design, manufacture, supply and through-life support of nuclear propulsion-related products and systems in support of the Royal Navy's submarine fleet.

The successor to the Vanguard Class of Submarines is moving through its detailed design phase. The design solution recommended at the end of the concept phase to the Ministry of Defence (MoD) was approved for progression through Initial Gate, and work is currently focused on closing out the detailed design in mid-2015 prior to Main Gate in 2016, which is a major milestone and will be the culmination of four years' hard work on many fronts. PWR3 has been down selected as the Primary Plant option and as such the design and development phase that is currently progressing involves a significant scope of work.

This is a key function ensuring the integration of the primary and secondary plant designs and of those designs within the wider platform solution, as well as supporting the development of the operating principles for the propulsion plant, the nuclear safety case and the ship safety case.

The role will operate across both the primary and secondary design teams to ensure that the design, development of operating principles and development of the safety cases is carried out in the most efficient manner possible, whilst ensuring the customer requirements are met. The role will also provide the opportunity to contribute to a wide range of CFBU specific tasks in the lead-up to Critical Design Review and Main Gate.

As a Design Engineer within Rolls-Royce Submarines, your main responsibilities will be to:

      • Ensure a fully integrated arrangement from the system level through to the component level, whilst also ensuring the design supports the relevant operational and safety requirements.
      • Encourage and guide others to provide and implement logical solutions, whilst also empowering them to make positive changes to improve.
      • Help inform the correct design trade-offs are taking place in all phases of the design.
