As a member of the Design and Development Engineering Team, you will produce designs for standard products and special products within the cutting tool product line. Job Description: Work closely with product development and sales teams to create conceptual designs and applications to meet the metal removal requirements of customers in the aerospace, defense, oil & gas drilling, transportation, and power generation industries. Partner with manufacturing engineering group to evaluate and/or modify initial designs to improve manufacturability of products while maintaining needed functionality of the design. Responsible for updating product drawings concerning standard and special product offerings in different technologies. Responsible for designs for cutter bodies and inserts that are consistent with standard and special tool configurations in different technologies (Milling, Turning, Drilling, etc.). Apply design knowledge and experience to work with engineering, manufacturing and sales to identify problems with performance and tool life; recommend solutions or enhancements as needed. Adapt procedures, processes, tools, equipment and techniques to meet the more complex requirements of the position. Apply basic to advanced design knowledge to reverse engineer designs as needed. Requirements: Minimum of 5 years manufacturing experience in the metals industry is required for Junior Design Engineer level placement. Minimum of 8 years manufacturing experience in the metals industry is required for Senior Design Engineer placement. Must be authorized to work for any employer in the United States. This client will not sponsor a work visa. Project leadership experience is a significant plus. Intermediate knowledge of mechanical engineering principles and manufacturing methods are required. FEMdesigner software proficiency; Finite Element Method (FEM), its practical application often known as Finite Element Analysis (FEA). Intermediate proficiency with SolidWorks, Unigraphics 3-D CAD systems required (Siemens NX6 preferred). Working knowledge of cutting tool products and associated components required. Demonstrated ability to draw finish designs from sketches required. Good mathematical skills, including geometry and trigonometry required. Good computer skills to include Microsoft Office required. Good oral and written communication skills required. Education: Associate Degree and/or Technical Certificate in a closely related field of study is required. (5 plus years of carbide / steel cutting tool design experience may be substituted for a 2 year degree program) Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering is preferred.
