I understand that I can use ball screw driver with a motor shaft but it's not desirable with hand fed machines. My purpose is to design a manual knob which when rotates clockwise or anti-clock wise it moves a vertical rod up or down. what should I use??

Perhaps a typo for "hand fed" (i.e. manual)?

Screw and nut can be used

Screw and nut can be used as you are using knob to rotate the screw. The ball screw will be reversible, i mean when ball screw is used friction will be very low and your slide may not stay on position you want.

      hand fed mechanism by hand

A Trapezoidal thread of bolt and nut may suit your application of vertical up and down motion, especially if you want to be done by hand. thread selection --> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acme_thread_form

OK - I changed the thread title so things make a bit more sense. :)
