This 3 part series looks well worth a look if you're in the UK. Here's a link to the first episode "How to build... a nuclear submarine).

      http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b0 ... Submarine/

      Synopsis:
Sorry but it can't be viewed outside the UK :(

The other two episodes (not yet shown) are "How to build... a jumbo jet engine" and "How to build... Britain's Secret Engineers". Enjoy!

If you're not in the UK, here is a small compensation for your disappointment: http://www.madehow.com/Volume-5/Nuclear-Submarine.html

I saw the "How to build a jet engine" epiosode the other day which details Rolls Royce's design cycle - I was amazed that the turbine blades operate above their melting temperature, and are air cooled by integral vents which dissapate enough energy to boil a kettle in 1/20 second, and are "grown" from a single metal 'crystal'!

Then I remembered that a friend of mine who works for Rolls has one at home mounted as an award he got while working there! Never stopped to think how much that 8" bit of metal was worth!!

      Great series!

That sound fascinating, Pete. I'll have to check that one out. I love these "how it's made" kind of shows. You just can't beat a bit of armchair engineering!
