Hello, I have to make a boxe with an ingress protection degree equal to IP54 (5: Dust-protected ; 4: Protected against water jets). To ensure this requirement, should I use a gasket (seal) between cover and housing ? If yes : Which form of gasket should I use (O-ring, plan...) ? If no : Whish condition should I respect to ensure this IP54 ? Please Help Thank you very much
Hi Sword I would use a seal for IP54. 1.Try to design for an unbroken seal - o-ring or gasket. 2. Ensure the seal goes around the inside of any screw bosses. More important for IP57 etc but worth doing. 3. Any corner rads should not be too small otherwise the seal will not do its job 4.Ensure the two case halves assemble against each other, compressing the seal. Do not assemble on the seal itself. Look at other enclosures for tips. Good luck Alex
Thank you very much Alex for your collaboration. I will take all your recommendations and I will tell you if it works. best regards
IP54 enclosure query Hi, I designed a range of outdoor electrical enclosures to meet at least IP56, that are currently on sale in B&Q & numerous other outlets, & know it can take a lot of design effort & testing to get a working design. Further to what Alex has said, correct compression on the seal around the full perimeter of joint is critical. You need to also consider the final use of the enclosure & if heat or condensation may be an issue. It sounds bizarre but some enclosures need to breath but not let water or moist air in. I good reference that I found useful was the guide here: http://www.cameuk.com/camenew/tech-docs/08_Misc drawings and diagrams/IPCodes.pdf Research websites for enclosure manufacturers as they will highlight all the key points & offer their solutions. Regards
Hello Gary259, Thank you for your detailed useful information. I have a great deal of interest with the sealing field. Best regards
Hi Sword! As gary259 mentioned you will need to test the enclosure in different conditions, so if you are in the test phase do not forget the vibration: try your box on different frequencies and amplitudes, while you spray the water on it. Regards
Hi Bulcsù, Yes after model design I will make samples for the mechanical test (ingress protection test, vibration, thermal, choc...). Thank you Regards
