Oh every job out there is suitable, you can be literally anything you want to be. But you should more importantly focus on what are the things you better than others and what are the things you enjoy doing the most. People work in production, RnD, structural design, aerodynamic design, so many other departments. Design engineers are everywhere. But also what matters is what skills you have, where did you study from (this is important because recruitment agencies prefer newbies from reputed schools). To find out what you like doing the most, I would suggest you work for a small design company, the once that do freelance projects with bigger companies. Here you are the designer, you are the stress analyst, you are everything and you also get to learn most from here. After that, choose your path and apply to bigger companies, you will also have gained experience which is key in landing a job these days.
I completely agree with the sentiments above - try to find a small company doing a type of work that you're particularly interested in, or you enjoy. Small companies can be a great way of teaching many areas of engineering as often you're called upon to be a 'jack of all trades' rather than just specialising in one niche area. Good luck!
Pieces of advice above are really appreciated. But sometimes, in some countries, the advice is just "find a job". In my country (Bosnia and Herzegovina) is lack of vacancy positions, and finding a job is not an easy task, especially for fresh graduates. So, sometimes and somewhere luck plays a significant role in your career. What about your nearby? Do you have many opportunities so you can choose a job?
Hi Dedeech, I was studying my bachelors in Turkey and during my internship at Turkish Airlines. I saw a couple of Bosnian guys working and they were quite happy. One of them was an intern with me. Apparently, he spoke Turkish and normally getting a job in the Turkish market is horrendous. But just because of his language skills of being able to speak Turkish and his native language (and of course English) he got the job at one of the most reputed airline carrier in the world. Mind you that in Turkey, everyone speaks Turkish but they did not get the job. It was a foreigner who got it. I think companies are biased when it comes to hiring a foreign talent. If it’s a job where you’ll be the face of the company. They want you to be a foreigner to show off their hiring skills. On the other hand, local small companies are have more vacancies than you think. But they are not able to advertise it. If you were to go and talk to CEO’s of a 100 companies. At least 20 companies would have some sort of an opening (I tried, went to 43 companies found 12 vacancies). But of course all of them don’t suite you, or your future plans. But, everytime I looked for jobs in Turkey I would come back unsatisfied with the pay or with the job. Then I started looking out of turkey and it worked for me. If you really want to do a job that you love, then the sky is the limit. You can change countries. You can do a start up. Its easier said than done but its possible.
Hi MSHOFficial, Thanks for sharing your story and thoughts. Luckily I haven't had any issue finding a job. I got a job even before I graduated, but I know some fellows that are struggling. Of course, in order to success, you have to be proactive and be better than a competition. I was also doing an internship abroad (Qatar) during the study, and that gave me a really valuable experience. Also, I find and I am finding each day, foreign languages are a huge asset. I chose to build my life and my career in my country. I am not interested anymore in finding another job in another company. I am just looking for a way to start my own business. As you said, it is not easy, but it is possible.
All the best with that mate. I hope so you’ll be successful. But about what you said previously about Bosnia. The lack of jobs, is it current situation or has it been there for a while now? and is it a general thing or specific to the engineering discipline.
Thanks mate. Look, generally, our economy is still in the developing phase. We can see some small progress, but jobs are generally underpaid. However, engineering discipline is still in the best position compared to other.
I've seen this a lot. When you speak a less common language it can really open doors for you in terms of jobs. People say that Native English speakers are lucky because they naturally understand English to a high level... but in reality it's almost luckier to be born in a country where English isn't the native English but it's still taught from an early age (eg. most of Europe). That way you almost get a 'free' language. If you have a third language then even better!
