      Position Title: Principal Engineer

      Our client is a leading consumer products manufacturer and distributor of a diverse portfolio of consumer and personal products with brands recognized and trusted around the globe.

      Lead R & D Advanced Development activities to identify key consumer insights and product opportunities that meet the needs of the consumer. Lead programs through early development of product ideas, demonstrating proof-of-principle, and readying concepts for transfer into feasibility phase to maintain a new product pipeline to meet the needs of the 5-year roadmap. Additionally, assign projects to direct reports and/or external partners and monitor progress against timelines and due dates, and provide guidance and coaching.

      Essential Functions:

      Lead key project work to develop consumer insights and translate into new product ideas; develop and execute project plans that demonstrate concept viability against consumer, technical, and business criteria.

      Lead internal and/or external design and engineering work to generate product concepts to satisfy unmet consumer needs, and develop stimuli (prototypes, functional models, visual models, etc.) for consumer and/or technical evaluation.

      Partner with Consumer Insights group to develop and support the execution of strategic consumer learning plans to achieve business objectives.

      Voice of Consumer work to uncover unmet needs, to include focus groups, ethnography, need gap analysis, product testing, one on one interview, etc. Vet concepts with consumer/professional groups.

      Ready concepts for transfer into feasibility phase of the product development process. Partner with the implementation R&D team to translate product concepts into viable product designs.

      Provide direction to staff. Provide strong coaching and mentoring to direct reports.

      Work with R&D leadership and business team to minimize exposures and risks associated with assignments. Develop contingency plans when appropriate.

      Attend Trade/Industry Shows mining for new product ideas and IP evaluation.

      Keep abreast of existing and new technologies or product opportunities that are applicable to areas of responsibility. Monitor related consumer and product trends.

      Interpret regulatory guidelines as they pertain to areas of responsibility.

      Manage IP (intellectual property) within area of responsibility.

      Suggest and lead implementation of changes to improve the organization.

      Prepare or provide guidance to direct reports.

      Guide discussion during product team meetings.

      Travel domestically and internationally as required on assigned projects.

      Experience/Education Required:

      BS in Mechanical Engineering or similar engineering discipline; advanced degree desirable.

      Minimum of 10 years in product design, preferably in consumer packaged goods or similar

      Prior managerial or supervisory experience. Ability to accurately forecast human resource needs and staff requirements. Strong coaching and mentoring skills.

      Skills and Abilities Required

      Technical Skills:

      Must have the ability to translate consumer insights into innovative solutions for new product ideas.

      Must have the ability to lead project teams to create and develop early stage product concepts/prototypes that meet consumer desired performance and functionality.

      Must have the ability to lead the evaluation of product concepts to demonstrate proof-of-principle.

      Must have the ability to design medium complexity assemblies, mechanisms and plastic part configurations for infant care products.

      Must have the ability to communicate product concepts using ProEngineer or similar. Must be knowledgeable of good engineering drawing layout practices.

      Must be knowledgeable of plastic materials and part design requirements and standards. Must be familiar with various manufacturing processes and mold types (e.g. injection molding, blow molding, assembly methods, decoration methods, mono and multi layer film processing knowledge a plus, etc.)

      Must have the ability to resolve product design trade-offs and complexities with normal supervision.

      Familiarity with technical tools such as DOE, FMEA, Reliability Engineering, DFA, DFM, Kaizen a plus

      Project Management Skills:

      Must have the ability to prioritize and organize workload on multiple programs of low to medium complexity.

      Must have the ability to manage assigned projects, monitoring the status of all elements affecting the outcome of the program.

      Must have the ability to develop and implement schedules and ensure that relevant procedures are followed.

      Must have the ability to manage third party relationships (e.g. outside design and engineering consultants, university programs, inventors, suppliers, etc.)

      Must have the ability to guide support personnel as required to accomplish tasks.

      Must have the ability to clearly communicate technical and non-technical information via verbal presentation and in writing with management, team members and support personnel with normal supervision.

      Additional Skills:

      Effective verbal / written communication, interpersonal, and influencing skills. Ability to interface with internal and external contacts at all levels. Ability to clearly communicate technical and non-technical information via verbal presentations and in writing.

      Must be capable of quickly establishing relationships both internally and externally, and at all levels.

      Ability to develop and execute innovative solutions for new product ideas. Highly analytical and skilled in achieving operational efficiencies and committed to quality. Capable of seeing the big picture.

      Excellent negotiating and influencing skills, and capable of working across multiple functional areas, with a true sense of

      urgency in responding to delivering on challenges.

      Good computer skills. Proficiency with Word, Excel, Access/databases e-mail and internet applications.

      Excellent organizational, prioritizing and follow up skills.

      Ability to handle multiple tasks / projects simultaneously.

      Ability to think and act independently and make sound decisions.

      Demonstrated ability to complete projects on time.

      Good problem-solving skills.
