I was wondering whether anyone knew of a mechanism that I could use for a pinion gear mounted to a shaft that would allow the shaft to rotate the pinion gear, but also allow for linear movement of the shaft whilst keeping the gear in position? I hope the diagram below will help explain what I mean:

Use splines on the shaft and the gear. tolerance the fit so there is always clearance.
Add a "finger" from the case to keep the gear from moving axially.
