BAE Systems Military Air & Information are currently recruiting for a number of skilled Aircraft Fitters to work on a permanent basis across our Warton and Samlesbury sites.

Aircraft fitters are employed to conduct mechanical tasks across a wide range of products including Typhoon, Hawk and F35 covering the full production lifecycle from detail manufacturing, minor and major assemblies, final assembly to acceptance and delivery to customers.

Applicants must have served a recognised apprenticeship, have a deep understanding of mechanical work and should be able to carry out the various tasks performed in the aircraft and support industry.

In order for applications to be processed, suitable candidates will need to supply evidence that they have completed a ‘time served’ full Engineering Apprenticeship which has been formally certificated by a national Awarding Organisation and must include both a Further Education and competence component. This may take the form of service records for those that carried this out whilst serving in the armed services. Candidates who are unable to provide the required information will not be progressed through the selection process.

As a Skilled Fitter your main responsibilities will involve:

      • Ensure safe systems of work are carried out
      • Read/Interpret mechanical drawings
      • Install and maintain various types of mechanical equipment
      • Fault diagnosis and defect rectification
      • Carry out detailed inspections and be fully conversant in the use of all measuring equipment

As a Skilled Fitter your skills will ideally include:
      • Mechanical engineering knowledge
      • Technical problem solving
      • Ability to work with minimal supervision
      • A basic understanding of mechanical drawings and guidance information
      • Aircraft safety and cockpit awareness
      • Understanding of RAF ethos & values

What we’re looking for in you:

Suitable candidates will have a good understanding of safe systems of work including mechanical work, tag-out, confined spaces, working at height and specific safety operations. A sound knowledge of mechanical systems and associated equipment is essential

Individuals undertaking these roles will be expected to understand and comply with Tool Control and Foreign Object Debris (F.O.D.) procedures and also undertake any relevant training specific to their role i.e. cockpit awareness training

You should be conversant and competent with the use of hand tools, aircraft tooling and measuring equipment in the production of close tolerance components and installation of fasteners to the necessary regulated standards.

The Operations team members carry out operational activities in line with defined operating procedures. This role requires awareness of Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) procedures necessary for the safe functioning of the team, awareness of quality standard for the job in hand and awareness of the product / processes relevant for the specific work area.
