      Take a look at the mechanism inside the pull starter of a lawnmower or other small gas engine device. Some simply use spring loaded ratchet and pawls, with centrifugal force keeping the pawls disengaged when the engine is running (the pawls on the engine side), but others rely on sliding friction to move the pawls (attached to the starter side) into the appropriate place to engage the engine.
